| Mission Purpose |
|
The Farm Labor Organizing Committee e, AFL-CIO, (FLOC) is both a social movement and a labor union. Our immediate constituency is migrant workers in the agricultural industry, but we are also involved with immigrant workers, Latinos, our local communities, and national and international coalitions concerned with justice. The FLOC vision emphasizes human rights as the standard and self-determination as the process. We struggle for full justice for those who have been marginalized and exploited for the benefit of others, and we have sought to change the structures of society to enable these people a direct voice in their own conditions. |
Main Activities |
|
Organizing in the fields throughout North Carolina around labor, health, and immigration issues. Community programs aimed at building relationships between members of the Latino community and others, especially Black and Brown coalition building. Focus on labor and economic rights for all people. International and cross border organizing and coalition building around issues of immigration and unjust trade practices. We provide referrals for injured workers, publish factsheets about legal rights and job hazards, conduct training for employees and employers about occupational health and safety topics. |

| Mission Purpose |
|
Food Not Bombs was founded in Boston in 1980 on a very simple principle: no one should go hungry in a country where 96 billion pounds of food--nearly 200 pounds per person--is thrown away each year. All the food served by Food Not Bombs would otherwise have been wasted--in Greensboro we get bruised produce from Deep Roots, leftover baked potatoes from Outback Steakhouse, day-old bread from Panera. With those donations and whatever other food we can salvage, we serve anywhere from 45 to 90 people a week. |
Main Activities |
|
Greensboro Food Not Bombs serves free meals three times a week: Mondays at 6:00 outside the Central Library on N. Church St., and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 at St. Mary’s House , 930 Walker Avenue, around the corner from Tate Street. On Mondays we start cooking at 4:30 at the Church of the Covenant on South Mendenhall between Walker and Morehead (kitchen door is through the parking lot on the Morehead side); on Tuesdays and Thursdays we cook at 4:30 at St. Mary’s House, 930 Walker Avenue. |

Mission Purpose |
Peace and Conflict Studies is an interdisciplinary major that studies the nature of conflict and violence, the possibilities of social change, and the means for resolving and transforming conflict nonviolently. The major draws on Guilford College's Quaker heritage by seeking the roots of situations of injustice and oppression, exploring nonviolent social change, emphasizing each individual's search for truth within different levels of community, and focusing on practical problem-solving. Peace and conflict studies melds two related fields of study, conflict resolution and peace studies, in a complementary, creative interaction. It encourages an interdisciplinary, holistic relationship between personal and social change, structured modes of conflict resolution and creative nonviolent activism, careful analysis of structural violence and exploration of spiritual foundations for peaceable living and action. |
Main Activities |
Our primary activities are educational, including classroom, co-curricular programs, and experiential education. Many students studying Peace & Conflict Studies help organize and promote co-curricular and extra curricular activities. This is especially true of the recipients of the Helen Steinfeldt / American Friends Service Committee Peace We sponsor several co-curricluar programs each year including the Fleming Lecture Series. We provide training for and oversee the work in mediation and facilitation of the Guilford College Conflict Resolution Resource Center. Mission Purpose |
Fighting Discrimination in all its forms.
We are a grass-roots organization, started in late 2007, in the Piedmont-Triad area. It is our belief that we, as citizens, must take on the task of fighting discrimination in all of its forms. We plan to do this through education, speaking to groups, handing out flyers, holding meetings and hosting events. We will also demonstrate against hate groups that make public appearances. It is time for change- people need to be educated on matters of discimination. The Civil Rights Movement took us a long way, but the job isn't finished yet. We need to work together for change in our own communities and daily lives.
