Mission Purpose |
The Farm Labor Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO, (FLOC) is both a social movement and a labor union. Our immediate constituency is migrant workers in the agricultural industry, but we are also involved with immigrant workers, Latinos, our local communities, and national and international coalitions concerned with justice. The FLOC vision emphasizes human rights as the standard and self-determination as the process. We struggle for full justice for those who have been marginalized and exploited for the benefit of others, and we have sought to change the structures of society to enable these people a direct voice in their own conditions.
|
Main Activities |
Organizing in the fields throughout North Carolina around labor, health, and immigration issues. Community programs aimed at building relationships between members of the Latino community and others, especially Black and Brown coalition building. Focus on labor and economic rights for all people. International and cross border organizing and coalition building around issues of immigration and unjust trade practices. We provide referrals for injured workers, publish factsheets about legal rights and job hazards, conduct training for employees and employers about occupational health and safety topics.

| Mission Purpose |
|
Food Not Bombs was founded in Boston in 1980 on a very simple principle: no one should go hungry in a country where 96 billion pounds of food--nearly 200 pounds per person--is thrown away each year. All the food served by Food Not Bombs would otherwise have been wasted--in Greensboro we get bruised produce from Deep Roots, leftover baked potatoes from Outback Steakhouse, day-old bread from Panera. With those donations and whatever other food we can salvage, we serve anywhere from 45 to 90 people a week. |
Main Activities |

Cooking on Mondays and Thursdays at the HIVE, 1214 Grove Street
starting at 4:30 p.m. On Mondays we take the meal to the Central Library
(219 N. Church Street) at 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays we serve at the HIVE
at 6:00 p.m. We also operate a food pantry at the HIVE on

Mission Purpose |
Peace and Conflict Studies is an interdisciplinary major that studies the nature of conflict and violence, the possibilities of social change, and the means for resolving and transforming conflict nonviolently. The major draws on Guilford College's Quaker heritage by seeking the roots of situations of injustice and oppression, exploring nonviolent social change, emphasizing each individual's search for truth within different levels of community, and focusing on practical problem-solving. Peace and conflict studies melds two related fields of study, conflict resolution and peace studies, in a complementary, creative interaction. It encourages an interdisciplinary, holistic relationship between personal and social change, structured modes of conflict resolution and creative nonviolent activism, careful analysis of structural violence and exploration of spiritual foundations for peaceable living and action. |
Main Activities |
Our primary activities are educational, including classroom, co-curricular programs, and experiential education. Many students studying Peace & Conflict Studies help organize and promote co-curricular and extra curricular activities. This is especially true of the recipients of the Helen Steinfeldt / American Friends Service Committee Peace We sponsor several co-curricluar programs each year including the Fleming Lecture Series. We provide training for and oversee the work in mediation and facilitation of the Guilford College Conflict Resolution Resource Center. Mission Purpose |
The Campaign to Raise the Minimum Wage in the City of Greensboro is many
things: a citizens initiative allowed by Greensboro's city charter, a peoples movement for social change, an experiment in grassroots democracy, and an effort for a greater measure of economic justice. At it's core, though, it is a group of folks who have the common belief that communities should have the power to agree upon and enact basic standards for those things that effect the life and well-being of its members. In an effort to act upon this belief, the Greensboro Minimum Wage Committee was formed to increase the minimum wage in the city of Greensboro.

Mission Purpose |
Fighting Discrimination in all its forms.
We are a grass-roots organization, started in late 2007, in the Piedmont-Triad area. It is our belief that we, as citizens, must take on the task of fighting discrimination in all of its forms. We plan to do this through education, speaking to groups, handing out flyers, holding meetings and hosting events. We will also demonstrate against hate groups that make public appearances. It is time for change- people need to be educated on matters of discimination. The Civil Rights Movement took us a long way, but the job isn't finished yet. We need to work together for change in our own communities and daily lives.

Mission Purpose |
Poetry GSO was conceived in April 2003 by the Greensboro
Public Library with many community partners who shared a common desire to promote and celebrate poetry. Poetry plays a part in all of our lives. In addition to those who enjoy reading poetry, nearly everyone experiences poetry in some way: through music, in worship, and in ceremony. Language and customs are often learned by the very young through poetry in the form of nursery rhymes. Poetry can be a very personal experience or it can be shared with a group.

Mission Purpose |
One City One Book is a library led community wide read designed to build community and intended to share the joys of reading. What if everyone in Greensboro read the same book...and then set out to build a stronger community? Every other year, the Greensboro Public Library along with many partners, leads a city-wide reading of a selected title. Lively programs of discussion, films, theatrical productions, readings, and more are held to engage the entire community in the theme of the chosen work.

Mission Purpose |
The Racial Equity Institute is an alliance of trainers and organizers who have devoted themselves to the work of anti-racist transformation. In our contemporary society, racism shapes the outcomes of all institutions. It pits entrenched patterns of power against what are often faint images of equity. The trainers and organizers of the Institute help individuals and organizations develop tools to challenge patterns of power and grow equity. We provide the individuals and organizations with whom we work: an analysis of racism and its cultural and historical roots; assistance in accessing their organization to determine its progress on the journey to become anti-racist; assistance in creating structures to hold the anti-racist work; assistance in developing an anti-racist vision and plan for change; coaching for traditional and emerging leadership in the principles and practices of anti-racism.

An informal, inclusive progressive social group. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics.
